Doctor Joel Fournier
Dr. Joel Fournier obtained a Doctorate in Physical Chemistry from Sherbrooke
University in 1994. As an honor fellowship, he conducted a one year of
post-doctoral studies at the National Research Institute/Energy & Advance
Material division in Varennes (Quebec). He also completed an Executive MBA
at the University of Quebec at Montreal in 2000.
Dr. Fournier joined the Industrial Material Institute of the National
Research Council of Canada in 1996. He was in charge of numerous industrial
research projects. One of them, a $1.3 Million research contract on PC board
manufacturing for automotive industry was one of the most important
privately financed projects obtained by the NRC.
In 2000, Dr. Fournier founded the Center of Chemical Process Studies of
Quebec (CEPROCQ). This Montreal based contract research & technology
transfer organization, is specialised in chemical process engineering
development for various industries. Over his direction, twenty-one employees
managed and executed many contracts in industrial technology transfer and
implementation. In 2005 under his direction, the CEPROCQ obtained a $8
million private and government grant for laboratory expansion .
In 2007, Dr. Fournier joined as Chief Scientific Officer Exploration
Orbite, a junior exploration mining company having a clays deposit in
Gaspesia. He was at the origin of a major technological development: a new
hydrometallurgical process for alumina and rare-earth production from clay.
In 2011 Exploration Orbite became Orbite Aluminae and started to trade on
Toronto stock exchange. The company completed a financing of $68M on publics
markets (TSX & OTC.QX) over the last 5 years. Based on this recognized success,
the market value of the company went from $ 10 to %$ 500 millions in less than
In 2012, Dr. Fournier founded the Alliance Magnesium. Alliance Magnesium Inc
is a privately-owned Canadian company which has developed a patented technology
for the production of magnesium (Mg) from serpentine minerals. Decades of chrysotile-asbestos
mining in Canada have produced remains of serpentine rock trailing with 26.3% magnesium
metal content, a highly valuable opportunity for metal extraction. Alliance Magnesium has secured
access to more than 400 Million Mt of tailings for its future operations. Our proprietary
technology for 20 years is patent protected and it is an effective hydrometallurgical
and electrolysis clean tech process that could bring a global paradigm shift in
Magnesium metal is strategic for automotive and aerospace industries to reduce
average vehicle weight and increase fuel efficiency as well as lower greenhouse gas
emissions. Most experts predict an increase in magnesium use in the medium term.
The revolutionary process of Alliance Magnesium will improve the way magnesium, a strategic
light metal, is produced in the world and will turn international environmental
issues into economic successes.
Dr. Fournier is the author and the co-author of over than 50 scientific
publications and cummunications, including somes in top ranking journals.
He is also the author of over 15 patents and has completed over than 30
technological transfers. Dr. Fournier was a member of Boards of several
public organizations including the Quebec Industrial Research
